Used FN 509 Tactical 9mm

The FN 509 Tactical, an extension of the FN 509 family, is based on FN’s submission pistol that the U.S. Army tested for its Modular Handgun Trials, but includes the significant improvements to the design that were implemented in the FN 509. The pistol features a patent-pending Low-Profile Optics Mounting System that enables the platform to accept miniature red dot (MRD) optics that co-witness with the suppressor-height night sights. The slide cap has raised sight wings that protect iron sight alignment if the pistol is dropped or jostled, and provides a textured ramp for racking the slide against a belt loop, pant pocket or boot. An FN-signature 4.5-inch, cold hammer-forged, stainless-steel barrel with target crown, 1/2″ x 28 threads that accept the bulk of 9mm suppressors available and thread cap with integrated O-ring to prevent loosening during use complete the top end. This used 509 Tactical ships with two interchangeable backstraps and FN logo soft pistol case. This model has a black finish and comes with one 17-round magazine and two 24-round magazines. $699.99

New Glock 43X MOS 9mm

New Glock 43X MOS 9mm pistol. The Glock 43X combines a compact-size grip length, a built-in beaver tail and a subcompact-slim slide for a comfortably balanced, versatile grip that’s ideal for a variety of users. It features Glock’s Safe Action system which provides a consistent trigger pull from the first to the last round. The three automatic independently operating mechanical safeties are built into the fire control system of the pistol. All three safeties disengage sequentially as the trigger is pulled and automatically reengage when the trigger is released. The frame is made of polymer with hardened steel guides. It features an ideal grip angle and low weight. The slide stop lever and the magazine catch are easily operated with the shooting hand. The advanced surface treatment of the slide results in optimal hardness by considerably reducing wear and tear and it makes it corrosion resistant, even when operating in saltwater conditions. The matte surface minimizes light reflection. The barrel is mechanically locked and cold-hammer forged. It also has the same advanced surface treatment as the slide. Its extractor serves as a loaded chamber indicator to comply with the laws of certain states and its position may visually and physically indicate whether there is a cartridge in the chamber of the pistol. This MOS version features a slide that is precision machined to provide a mounting system for popular optic sights. With multiple adapter plates, you can quickly and easily mount miniature red dot sights. Note: The G43X with the Modular Optic System (MOS) does not come with adapter plates. Comes with two 10rd magazines, a speedloader, and a basic cleaning kit. $529.99

William Aprill’s “UNTHINKABLE”

GET INSIDE CRIMINAL MINDS with William Aprill’s “UNTHINKABLE” – Concepts and Techniques for the Gravest Extreme

Under the auspices of Aprill Risk Consulting, William has presented his material on violent criminals and their decision-making, defensive incident aftermath, mindset development and defensive preparedness locally and nationally.

Unthinkable is, in brief, a tour of the dark side of criminal violence. In one very full day, attendees will undertake a fast-paced and interactive overview of how dangerous aggressors think as they decide whom to victimize, and we’ll review target demeanor and behavior for cues that we appear easily victimized. Hands-on training will introduce robust, effective techniques for disarming an assailant armed with a pistol and the day will finish with an in-depth survey of the best processes and methods to establish a powerful and adaptive defensive mindset.

1/17/17 & 1/19/17 Women’s 2-Day Self-Defense Class

This year, tens of thousands of Americans will report being assaulted and many more will find themselves in potentially dangerous confrontations. Many of them will be women.

In this class you will be given the tools to be able to look at someone without giving him or her permission to speak to you.

You will be provided examples of how you can maintain your personal space and boundaries even when “a friend gets too friendly”.

You will learn how to create and establish a presence of being strong, to look strong, even when you may not feel strong.

While this class does not teach weapon use we can provide information on carrying weapons that will allow you to make an informed choice.

The goal is for you to leave with self-confidence; the assurance that comes from knowing that you are equipped to face an emergency.

This program is presented in two parts on two different evenings. Part One will discuss middle ground self-defense. Part Two is hands on and is physical. You must attend Part One to participate in Part Two. You may participate as much or as little as you want on the second night.

The instructor for this program is Chris M. Smaby, training specialist for the Cedar Rapids Police Department and chief instructor for the Japan Karate Association of Iowa.

Women’s 2-Day Self-Defense Class – Jan. 26 & 28, 2016

For those who wear blue everyday

Polished boots and blue pants

make up my daily wear.

A bullet proof vest and gloved hands

can’t save me from those who don’t care.

Many will judge, many will guess,

my job is an open book.

Though forward I trudge, I’ll do my best.

Most don’t even give me a second look.

I’m allowed no mistakes, no not one,

on any given day.

I must perform, no matter the stakes.

I may lose either way.

I deal with fear. I deal with loss.

I have emotions I can’t show.

Don’t shed a tear at any cost.

I have pain most will never know.

I’ve seen birth and I’ve seen death,

I have been part of it all.

I go home to a family just like yours but

have to put up a wall.

People will talk, people will stare,

They look at me with spite.

But when violence comes to their lair

I show up in the middle of the night.

I do my job no matter their race, no matter which neighborhood.

I see the fear written on their face,

though I’m only there to do good.

I just want to go home alive,

And hug my kids like others.

For peace in this town is for what I strive,

with the help of my sisters and brothers.

We’ll never get rich, we’ll never be known ….like so many movie stars.

Sometimes we bitch, sometimes we moan… But we always get back in those cars.

Belts that are heavy and feet that are sore.

Minds that are busy while we walk through the store.

Every corner can pose a new violent threat.

We stay on our toes and we place our bets.

Today could be it, when I answer that call.

I don’t hesitate a bit, I go to them all.

For though I’ve been spit on and called every name.

I’m proud of this badge and will bring it no shame.

I do a job many won’t, but second guess me they will.

I’ll be on the front page if I am ever forced to kill.

I help sell papers and make for a good story.

I take all the pressure and get none of the glory.

For those that see me and talk under their breath.

I still step forward between them and death.

I’ll do this job proudly until my last days.

My kids will say loudly I needed no praise.

I wanted nothing but peace for those where I live.

And like so many others my life I may give.

So sleep well my friends, in your hometown.

Because until my last shift ends,

I’ll always be around…….

For those in blue everyday everywhere.

Weapons Retention Class

Having your firearm taken from you and then used against you is not something anyone wishes to experience. If you were placed in this type of situation do you know how to react? Have you trained to prevent this from happening?

For those who carry developing awareness to how your weapon is potentially being exposed to an assailant and recognizing what pre-attack signals an assailant may be presenting is a first step to your personal protection. In addition have you considered how to turn your body away from an attacker to make your firearm less accessible but still allow you to address the threat? And are you able to recognize the signals from an attacker that might indicate you are at risk, such as questions about your firearm or having someone stare at your carry side? Do you know how to create space to access your firearm for your personal defense? This class will help you learn these techniques.

CVO offers the Weapons Retention Level 1 and Level 2 class instructed by Chris Smaby. Level 1 must be completed before attending Level 2. The cost of this class is $65.00. Students should bring their holster and personal firearm to class where they will be cleared and then zip-tied open. This is a physical class and students should be prepared to engage as part of the learning process. Stop by the store to sign up!

You’re That Guy!

As many of my friends know I (CJ) was assaulted Sunday morning August 31, 2014 in a robbery attempt of the bicycle I was riding. I was punched in the face and had teeth broken. But I stayed on my bike and my assailant was unsuccessful in his attempt to steal my bike.

Ernie reached out to me and we had several talks that helped me sort out my head. I told him I wanted “good to come out of my assault” and it has. From the free class he offered “Personal Safety Concepts For Inside And Outside Your Home” in October 2014 to many other efforts good continues to come from me getting punched.

I’ve had people meet me and say “You’re that guy” after they realize I was the guy who got punched. I’m good with that. I am “that guy” and I’m always glad to share how things have changed for me.

Ernie knows of my avocation for working with rescue dogs (Two of our three dogs are rescue pitbulls) and he is printing these new CVO shirts and selling them for $20.00 with $5.00 from each shirt sale going to Last Hope Animal Rescue, the rescue I volunteer with.

You can pre-order your shirt here by stating the quantity and sizes you would like in the comments section of our Facebook page. The shirts will be printed on a light heather gray color.

News Random Thoughts From A Gun Guy

I Carry A Gun Every Day

I Carry A Gun Every Day by Ernie Traugh

Every day I get up and put on a gun. It’s part of my daily routine. No different from making coffee or feeding the dogs before I leave for work.

There is so much misinformation about who that makes me. I’m a “gun nut.” I’m one of “those right-wing Second Amendment people.” I’m the scourge of the earth to some.

Funny how that works.

They don’t even know me but they are worried that I’m what’s wrong with this country, this state and this city I call home. I walk among them and they don’t even know it. I’m the guy in the jeans and Under Armour shirt, the guy in the $200 sport coat and $125 shoes, the guy in Nike pants and a hoodie, and some days I’m the guy with dirty hands from working in the yard, but most of all I’m the guy they never see.

Oh, they acknowledge me sometimes. When I hold the door for them because my parents raised me that way. When I let them go ahead of me in line at the gas station because they seem to be in a hurry. When I pick up their baby’s pacifier in the aisle at the grocery store and hand it back to them because it fell out and they didn’t notice. But they don’t see me. I’m just another guy in the store with things in my hand. But only my left hand. I don’t carry things in my right hand. Not at the store. Not in public.

Why? Because I’m “that guy.” I know that bad things happen. Every day. Everywhere. So I try to be aware. I try to study my surroundings. I expect to not see it coming every time. I expect that evil may show up while I’m shopping or walking through the mall or eating at a restaurant. It doesn’t make me crazy. It doesn’t make me paranoid. It simply makes me aware. Unlike a lot of people that walk by me every day. Looking at their phones, their notes, their purses, or any of the other distractions that plague us. I get it.

I also get that there are wolves. Hungry. Lean. Skilled at their trade. Studying you. Studying me. They like you. They don’t like me. I see them at the mall. I see them at the gas station. I see them right here in this town. Do they know I’m armed? No, they don’t. They know that I’m aware. I look at them. Kill them with kindness. It’s a like a mutual agreement. I see you; you see me. Let’s not kid each other.

It’s weird in a way. The man and his friend in the store that looked all around and even glanced at the camera above us — those guys see me. I’m aware that the door is over there. I’m aware that the coffee pot is within reach and full. He urges me to go first to the counter. “Oh no, you go please. I have all day,” I reply. Now he has to make a purchase. Now he knows I’m polite …. I’m polite and I do not want them behind me in line.

The lady with her kid? She doesn’t notice me, but I’m there. I have a phone. I have a flashlight. I have two knives. I have a firearm. And I have a plan. If this doesn’t go well I want to get her and that little one out of here. Chances are nothing is going to happen until they’re gone anyway. I’d like to leave too.

One man asks the other a question. He hands the guy a few extra bucks to make the purchase of an item at the counter. They leave. I make my purchase. I call the employee by name and tell him to have a good night. I walk to the door and hold it open for the woman approaching. She says, “Thanks.” I say, “Yes ma’am.” Then, poof. I’m gone.

Just another uneventful trip to the store. The best kind ever. It’s funny those men truly saw me but other customers didn’t. Why? Maybe too busy. Maybe too much on their minds. Maybe because they didn’t worry for one second about those two men or me.

When I get home I don’t tell my wife about the two men who lingered. The two men who entered together but stood so far apart. The two men that seemed to have no sense of purpose or item they were in search of. No need to talk of them because nothing happened. This happens daily. Sometimes once. Sometimes multiple times. I like uneventful days.

Most people don’t know me. But man, they sure do judge me. If I use a gun to defend myself they will read about it. They will hear about it. They will weigh in on what should have happened.

I have seen bad people do bad things. I have seen good people dumbfounded and in shock because they couldn’t comprehend what was happening in front of them or, worse yet, to them. It’s not fun or pretty to think about, so most people don’t. They don’t stay awake late at night watching videos from self-defense experts. They don’t read the articles. They don’t look at unedited news on the Internet. They don’t search out the videos of people fighting for their lives and losing.

A man stabbed outside a bar. A couple hijacked and killed in front of the store. A store clerk shot even after complying with a robber’s demands. A video from inside the grocery store of a mad man with a gun shooting people while looking for his ex. Dashboard cameras of an officer involved in a shooting. It’s an ugly world so they choose not to see it.

I don’t train for the warm fuzzy days where everyone gets along. I train for the other days. I try to round out my skill sets. I look at what others have done to succeed. I watch videos of those who haven’t. Some refer to it as making something good out of something bad. Like watching videos of officers being killed as every person that’s gone through any type of law enforcement academy has had to do. Learn from others’ experiences.

People from all walks of life legally carry guns. Some are men and some are women. Some are old and some are young. The ones I know train. The ones I know are aware: Aware of their surroundings. And aware of all of the armchair quarterbacking that will be done if they ever have to use that tool of last resort on their belt. So why do it anyway? Because they value their life and the lives of others. Simple.

My so-called “gun nut” friends and customers are some of the most congenial, trustworthy people I know. I only wish everyone had such friends. I wish everyone understood like I do.

Students will also train one handed firearm handling, reloading, and malfunction clearing. Unlike the CFS Program, in APH students, will be forced to deal with a variety of malfunctions in a way that is congruent with the conditions of a dynamic critical incident.

The APH course is an intense physically and mentally challenging course that will take any student’s confidence and ability to defend themselves with a gun to a higher level. Students will fire between 800-1000 rounds during this course

PLEASE NOTE:  Successful completion of the 2 day Combat Focus Shooting program is a prerequisite to attend Advanced Pistol Handling.

I CARRY A GUN EVERYDAY

Every day I get up and put on a gun. It’s part of my normal life. It’s part of my daily routine. No different than making coffee or feeding the dogs before I leave for work. These days there is so much misinformation on who that makes “me.” I’m a “gun nut.” I’m one of “those right wing 2nd Amendment people.” I’m the scourge of the earth to some. Funny how that works. “They” don’t even know me but… “they” are worried that I’m what’s wrong with this country, this state, and this city I call home. I walk among them and they don’t even know it. I’m the guy in the jeans and Under Armour shirt, the guy in the $200 sport coat and $125 shoes, the guy in Nike pants and a hoodie, and some days I’m the guy with dirty hands from working in the yard, but most of all I’m the guy they never “see.” Oh, they acknowledge me sometimes. When I hold the door for them because my parents raised me that way. When I let them go ahead of me in line at the gas station because they seem to be in a hurry. When I pick up their baby’s pacifier in the aisle at the grocery store and hand it back to them because it fell out and they didn’t notice. But they don’t “see” me. I’m just another guy in the store with things in my hand. But only my left hand. I don’t carry things in my right hand. Not at the store. Not in public. Why? Because I’m “that guy.” I know that bad things happen. Every day. Every where. Looking at their phones, their notes, their purse or any of the other distractions that plague us. I get it. I also get that there are wolves. Hungry. Lean. Skilled at their trade. Studying you. Studying me. They like you. They don’t like me. I see it all the time. I see them at the mall. I see them at the gas station. I see them right here in this town. They don’t like me at all. Do they know I’m armed? No, no they don’t. They know that I’m aware. I look at them. Kill them with kindness. I see them looking around and they see me looking around. It’s a like a mutual agreement. I see you; you see me. Let’s not kid each other. It’s weird in a way. The man and his friend in the store that looked all around and even glanced at the camera above us…those guys “see” me. But “they” don’t. I’m aware that the door is over there. I’m aware that the coffee pot is within reach and full. He urges me to go first to the counter. “Oh no, you go please. I have all day,” I reply. Now he has to make a purchase. Now he knows I’m polite….I’m polite and I do want them behind me in line. The lady with her kid? She doesn’t even “see” me. But I’m there. I have a phone. I have a flashlight. I have two knives. I have a firearm. And I have a plan. If this doesn’t go well I want to get her and that little one out of here. Chances are nothing is going to happen until they’re gone anyway. I’d like to leave too. One asks the other a question. He hands the guy a few extra bucks to make the purchase of an item at the counter. They leave. I make my purchase. I call the employee by name and tell them to have a good night. I walk to the door and hold it open for the woman approaching. She says, “Thanks”. I say, “Yes ma’am.”. Then, poof. I’m gone. Just another uneventful trip to the store. The best kind ever. It’s funny those men truly saw me but other customers didn’t. Why? Maybe too busy. Maybe too much on their mind. Maybe because they didn’t worry for one second about those two men or me. When I get home I don’t tell my wife about the two men who lingered. The two men who entered together but stood so far apart. The two men that seemed to have no sense of purpose or desired item they were in search of. No need to talk of them because nothing happened. This happens daily. Sometimes once. Sometimes multiple times. I like uneventful days. “They”…. They don’t see me. They don’t know me. But man, they sure do judge me. If I use a gun to defend myself they will read about it. They will hear about it. They will weigh in on what should have happened. I have seen bad people. I have seen bad people do bad things. I have seen good people dumfounded and in shock because they couldn’t comprehend what was happening in front of them or worse yet to them. They can’t wrap their minds around it. It’s not fun or pretty to think about. So they don’t. They don’t stay awake late at night watching videos from self-defense experts. They don’t go to the “schools” I go to. They don’t read the articles. They don’t look at unedited news on the Internet. They don’t search out the videos of people fighting for their lives and losing. A man stabbed outside a bar. A couple hijacked and killed in front of the store. A clerk shot on video after being compliant. A video from inside the grocery store of a mad man with a gun shooting people while looking  for his ex. Dashboard cameras of an officer involved in a shooting. It’s an ugly world so they choose not to see it. As I’ve said before, I’ve never felt the need to train for the warm fuzzy days where everyone gets along. We try. But we did not live those experiences. We can only watch in horror knowing how it’s going to end. This is where “they “come in. They judge others actions when they did not live through the experience. One only needs to turn on the TV to see it nationwide. There is talk about it at almost everyone’s workplace. When the crazy ex shows up to kill his spouse at the grocery store what will their plan be? Call 911. Pray for the police to get there quickly. Hope the man shooting people doesn’t come down their Aisle ? They’re  frozen with fear. Experiencing things that they have never thought about. They can’t run because their baby is in the shopping cart. All they have in their hand  is a shopping list and a pacifier. Handed to them by some guy that picked it up off the floor and pointed out their baby dropped it. That man is no longer in the aisle. He moved away with his phone to his ear and he’s hiding behind the island of fresh packaged meat crouched down on the floor. He yells something and next he is shooting what’s seems like so many rounds towards the bakery. He gets up and cautiously moves out of sight. Screaming commands. Screaming, “Call 911!” Do you “see” that man now? You will read about him tomorrow. In the paper. Front page. You read it as you walk out of the gas station unaware of the two men lingering and a young lady holds the door for you. You say, “Thanks,” and she says, “Yes ma’am” as she walks into the store with her coffee cup in her left hand. See. She’s right handed. She keeps that hand free. Free to draw her gun. Free to grab her keys if need be. Free to reach her knife. She is trained and she is  aware. People from all walks of life legally carry guns. Some are men and some are women. Some are old and some are young. The ones I know train. The ones I know are aware. Aware of their surroundings. And aware of all the armchair quarterbacking that will be done if they ever have to use that tool of last resort on their belt.  So why did they do it anyway? Because they value their life and the lives of others. Simple. My so-called “gun nut “friends and customers are some of the most congenial trustworthy people I know. I only wish everyone had such friends. I wish everyone understood them like I do.
I’ll “see” you around. Ernie
For those of you that truly know me you know I am passionate about people learning to protect themselves. You are responsible for your safety. No one else. Sometimes people confuse arrogance with my passion for you to learn how to be safer. That’s okay. I’ll never quit being passionate. This story is really about all of you who train and understand the responsibility. That’s the point. I’m merely one of thousands. Nothing special. That’s why I’m proud to be part of this group. I want you to consider some irony here…..pay attention….
I wrote this last night. I was laying in bed and couldn’t sleep. Watching the news and all the armchair quarterbacking about what this officer should or shouldn’t have done. Before the Florida shooting. Before ten other bad things in the news today. Because evil does and has always existed. I sent my words to a friend. Heather. She make a living helping educate police officers. She makes a living making sure things are spelled right….corrects Ernie’s long rambling sentences. When she did not have my ” words” corrected and back to me by 10am…. I texted her. She wasn’t done yet because her building had been evacuated….for an unknown reason. As everyone followed the plan and went to the ” safe area” and bunched up like sheep Heather did her own thing. She went to her safe place of choice. See….if you don’t know why your building is being cleared then I also wouldn’t stack up ten people deep where the disgruntled employee knows you will be. Sound funny? It’s not. Heather isn’t paranoid. Heather is smart. See in March of 1998 a couple middle school kids pulled the fire alarm and then shot the kids as they exited the building as planned. It’s not rocket science. Its easy to predict the actions of those who expect all to be okay. So good on Heather. Think for yourself if you know your plan is safer. Thank you Heather….you know you’re out there. Reading. Following. Learning. Training. Taking responsibility for your safety.

All Classes meet at 8:30 AM on the First Day November 15th & 16th, 2014

This will be the fifth time I have had the pleasure of listening to Mas’s lecture about what some would call the darkest days of your life. There is so much to consider when carrying a firearm and the ramifications after even a justified self defense shooting most people naturally become overwhelmed. Armchair quarterbacking from some media, so called experts and the public can be devastating. You don’t have to look far to see this in the national news.

Even world renowned self defense instructors such as Rob Pincus have attended this course and consider it a must.

I have never waivered from the statement that this is the finest training I’ve ever had regarding self defense. Ernie Traugh

Personal Safety Concepts For Inside And Outside Your Home FREE CLASS

My friend was recently attacked. He was attacked in broad daylight in a well-traveled area by a stranger. This attack made me want to reach out to those who may not know what direction to turn for training and education on the subject of personal safety.

Does the way you behave in public make you an easy target? Do you rely on tools or tactics to keep yourself safe that may not have the desired effect? Have you committed yourself to learning more about planning for a violent attack?

Studies prove that even just mentally preparing and devising a “what if” plan is better than doing nothing at all. Despite what we might want to believe, it has been proven time and time again that we have violent crime here in the Cedar Valley area. So to have no plan at all and walk through life with the attitude of “it won’t happen to me” is only burying your head in the sand.

Some have advised that being aware of your surroundings is the way to deal with an attack. This is a misconception. Being aware of your surroundings is vital in staying safe and limiting your chances of an attack … but what do you do once you are attacked? At that point, your brain tries to gather input at lightning speed while you are also dealing with massive emotions, confusion, and no structure.

I am offering a free class. This class is about realizing you must train both mentally and physically for dealing with violence. This class is a first step for some.

The class will be held on Wednesday October 1st, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Hiawatha Civic Center on Emmons Street in Hiawatha, Iowa.

This class is purely informational, and you will be given a list of training opportunities before you leave. Whether you choose to move forward with training offered by Cedar Valley Outfitters or other qualified instructors, I can help you by giving you some free advice and tips for keeping yourself safer than you are being unaware.

Please sign up for the class by calling Cedar Valley Outfitters at 319-447-6140. You need only to give your name and phone number. (We will not contact you unless the class is moved to a bigger venue.)

This informational class is open to men and women and children accompanied by their parents with the understanding that we will discuss adult topics such as actual crimes that have occurred in this area.

As my friend and instructor of our “Personal And Professional Safety For Women” Chris Smaby would say “THE WILL TO SURVIVE IS INSTINCTIVE BUT THE ABILITY TO SURVIVE IS LEARNED”

THE HIAWATHA CIVIC CENTER DOES NOT ALLOW THE CARRYING OF WEAPONS. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR LEGALLY CARRIED FIREARM IN YOUR VEHICLE. SECURITY WILL BE PROVIDED

CFS and APH Class review | Rob Pincus PDN Training Tour 2014

It took me a couple days to recoup from Shoot for Heroes but I want to say a few things about Rob Pincus and his training.    I had the pleasure of spending four days with Rob before the Shoot for Heroes event. I attended both the Combat Focus Shooting course and the Advanced Pistol Handling Course.

During the class debriefing, another student commented that the most memorable thing that Rob said during class was “I’m not here to be your life coach.” The student liked it because it meant that we were in class to learn and get rid of bad habits and not to be told that everybody will get a trophy for participating.

Rob is a brash instructor. It’s what you pay for. His knowledge and procedures are backed up by science, research, and thousands of films you can go see yourself.

Most  humans react the same way to a scary unseen and sometimes unknown threat. We don’t train ourselves to draw our pistol at the first sound of gunfire inside the mall. There is no buzzer that goes off that tells us when to present our weapons. Dramatic movements, screaming people, and sometimes the sound of gunfire will be stimuli we will have to respond to. Recklessly drawing your gun at the first sound of a gunshot might get innocent people hurt, including yourself. This is a good lesson. Critical thinking and target recognition should make up your first response.

Rob’s not shy about pointing out your body’s ability (or inability) to withstand your heartbeat jumping up to 140, 150, or maybe even 170 beats per minute and the toll this will take on your ability to think. In comes Fit Shot.

I didn’t perform my best at any time during those four days with my pistol and definitely not once we started physically working out. Though what was presented in class was but a snapshot of what a Fit Shot class involves, it was enough to make my heart race. And that’s enough to make one not shoot as proficiently as they normally do.

Many times I have taught simple drills such as running away from one’s firearm and running back to pick it up and try to perform with it. But that is with a known target and a known goal to achieve. When you add some critical thinking and life altering decisions to that stimulus, it’s a completely different experience.

Do you want to be a better defensive shooter? Start getting healthy. Your body’s ability to take the stress is something you’re going to rely on also. Many times in my life I’ve heard the old adage, “I carry a gun so I don’t have to run.” Good luck with that. Your ability to move and run might be what saves your own life or those of your loved ones.

I’m a big believer in being able to run your gun without looking. Always have been. Do I get caught looking at it sometimes? Absolutely. It can’t be more simple than when Rob pointed out, “for four days now all your brain has had to focus on is a boring piece of paper in front of you. Therefore of course it wants to look down at the thing that makes bang bang noises.” At the end of the class, we ran drills with glasses on that made us blind. That was an interesting experiment. The people I watched ran the gun better that way. The message: Don’t overthink something that is usually pretty simple to fix. And when the opportunity is there, move while you fix it.

The students in class were from different age groups, different skill levels, and far different backgrounds. But most of them understood that we were there to learn how to save our lives with a gun. For those that I saw Monday morning versus Thursday afternoon, their competency in handling a firearm had improved by leaps and bounds. Some were simply more refined and effective with things they were already familiar with.

Isn’t that the idea of being an expert with a firearm? Mastering the basics until it becomes second nature? Perfecting the fundamentals until you don’t have to think about it? Just do it. Learn to run your gun this way so you can focus on the things like the safest way out of here? Where is my family? Where is my threat? Fight or flight?

Rob is the first person to point out that the best gunfight is the one we don’t get into. He’s also teaching what he does the way he does because staying out of the gunfight is usually not an option.

The average “good guy/gal” with a gun only uses it when reacting to a “bad guy’s” actions or threats. The class starts there and ends there. This is the way we run a gun “always” so it will work in a gunfight.

Staying out of that gunfight or surviving the wounds that come from it are two of many other classes that Rob would suggest that you take. I like his attitude about furthering your education on many different subjects. Legal classes. Medical classes. Yoga classes. All are helpful in surviving something we hope to never experience.

No instructor will ever go unquestioned on why they picked a certain way to train. Rob Pincus is no different. The answer is never “because I told you to do it that way.” The answer is backed by facts, logic, and mechanics. “More reliable over a wider range of plausible circumstances” is Rob’s quote.

A quick search of Rob’s past posts shows 10,000 quarterbacks saying, “No overhand slide rack is needed.” Well, Gaston Glock calls it a slide stop for a reason and he knows a couple things about pistol reliability. The majority of the RSA’s energy used in chambering the next round is stored in the last distance of travel between slide lock and full rearward. Some guns don’t work well from slide stop. There are some great polymer framed carry pistols made in the USA that are famous for such issues. Why not master an overhand rack that is going to take care of most of all of your malfunctions? I can think of no good answer.

Another point Rob makes that I find very valid is about chasing after that 2/10 of a second faster performance. Usually when you try to learn a way to do some faster, it doesn’t always equal better under the circumstances that will arise during any defensive shooting.

I live in that place that he refers to as “the middle of nowhere Iowa.” It was -30 degrees last winter several times. I don’t know about you but I’m not tough enough to go out in that weather without gloves. Have you mastered your slide stop with every pair gloves you might have on? I didn’t. Is it plausible in my part of the country to be wearing gloves while wearing the gun? Absolutely. “More reliable over a wider range of plausible circumstances” applies to my lifestyle. I always have a gun on. I dictate that. When and where I will use it and how I’m dressed when that happens is not so much up to me. So I for one am a believer in Rob’s thought process.

Compare Rob to a doctor. You don’t go to a doctor to be told what you want to hear. You go to a doctor to be told what needs to be fixed. So I respectfully accept the criticism that comes with his sharp tone of voice — amongst the right crowd it will usually have some humor mixed in. It’s a great teaching strategy.

Many people have written many thorough reviews about Rob’s training throughout his PDN tour. Some reviews are very detailed regarding specific drills. I’m not going to make 10 bullet points of the best drills. The drills are solid training points you pay him for along with his charming attitude.

I would be good at presenting  Rob’s well designed training program. That’s part of his training brilliance. I will pursue just such things. It’s the enthusiasm, knowledge and passion that he teaches with that would make me take the class again.

I’m a believer that being “experienced” just means being able to do what the basics are but doing so consistently well “over a wide range of plausible circumstances.”

Check out Rob’s tour on I.C.E. Training’s web site (www.icetraining.us).

A special thanks to Rob’s certified instructor Jeff Mullenmeister. Jeff was a thorough professional. He joined us for two days and served as confirmation of Rob’s great judge of character. I enjoyed them both on the range.

We will have Rob back next June so feel free to contact me at the store to learn more.

Mas Ayoob MAG-20 Classroom | November 23 & 24, Central City, Iowa

George Zimmerman. That’s a name that most everyone knows at this point. Whether you think what he did was right or wrong doesn’t matter. You weren’t there.

It took just one trigger press… and his life changed forever. He will be front page news every time he gets a speeding ticket or is seen in public. His wife is leaving him. His family is falling apart. He can’t get a normal job. He can’t just go out to eat at the local restaurant like you or I. His entire world changed in one night.

Does this surprise you? It shouldn’t. And for the thousands of students of Mas Ayoob, it played out exactly the way he said it would. Those who have listened to Mas Ayoob’s MAG-20 lecture have been warned about the turmoil that can follow even a justified shoot.

I have attended this lecture three times. I have hosted it twice. I can’t say strongly enough that it is the best training one can get. There is no substitute for Mas Ayoob’s knowledge and insight into the post-shooting court room.

Do you know how your community will react if you have to use a tool of last resort like a firearm? If you pay attention to the news here in Iowa, did you see the media and public treatment of the Johnson County sheriff’s deputy who used deadly force? Did you listen to the armchair quarterbacking after the bank robber was shot in Cedar Rapids? It’s sad that those who deserve so much support had to be scrutinized by those who were not there. Those who do not have a clue what it is like to have to face bad men and make split-second decisions are always quick to judge those who do.

George Zimmerman’s life and the lives of his family were threatened while he awaited trial. Where was the outrage? Where were the demands for a fair trial? Isn’t that what the law requires for all of us?

And who will that jury be? Twelve other people who have taken the great responsibility of arming themselves and getting training? Twelve other people who know what a target glance is? Twelve other people who have been beaten in the dark alone? Twelve people in like circumstances?

Good luck finding those twelve people. They won’t be allowed to be jurors. Too much bias, it will be said of them. Really? If I’m a surgeon and I’m standing trial for something that went wrong during a procedure, will I get twelve other doctors to judge my fate? No. Will an officer get twelve other officers to decide what they would have done in those like circumstances? No. Police officers don’t get to be jurors. Biased, they will claim.

I for one can only wish that if my future lies in the hands of a jury that they will be a jury of people even willing to carry a gun and accept the responsibility that comes with such a tool – those who are willing to put their future at risk to save others.

On a battlefield those who save others doing the job most will never have are called heroes. And rightfully so. But if you take those same actions in civilian life to save your loved ones, you will be front page news and the topic of discussion around the break room at work. Many experts will weigh in who have not fired a gun – not at paper and most definitely never at a human trying to kill them.

I write this to remind you that if you carry a gun you also carry a burden. The burden of proof that you did what you had to do. The burden of knowing even the winner of a gunfight has nothing he or she didn’t have to start with.

A long road may lie ahead if you squeeze that trigger, but yet some still do. Why? Because their own comfort is less important than the security of those whom they protect. They make the choice to put themselves at risk in order to keep their loved ones safe.

If you want to learn from the best about a subject that most won’t or more likely can’t weigh in on, you need to listen to Mas Ayoob. This is the most important training you can ever get.

There is at least 50 shooters in this town alone that could school me on the range. My old eyes and slower reflexes will not let me be the man I once was. But I’m wiser wiser than before. I’m educated on this subject  because I spent 20 hours listening to every word Mas Ayoob said. I’ve paid three times to hear him. And in November this year I will pay again.

Never stop learning. Never stop getting educated. Never leave home without your gun and a clear head. We all have loved ones we owe this to.
